Dr. Paolo
Mainardi
Graduated in chemistry, with a specialization in physical chemistry, since 1982 he has been trying to apply the logic of physics to medicine.
A lover of physics and mathematics, he finds in the complex system of the microbiota a fascinating playing field.
The research team
The enthusiasm of Dr. Paolo Mainardi managed to involve prominent figures in the field of pharmacology and epilepsy research in his project. Among the first to join him was Prof. Emilio Perucca, past president of the International League Against Epilepsy, followed by his alter ego in experimental epilepsy pharmacology, Prof. Giovambattista De Sarro, the last student of Meldrum, considered the “father” of this discipline.
Subsequently, the “young” Prof. Pasquale Striano and Prof. Emilio Russo joined, who played a key role in creating an international research group on the microbiota, involving renowned scholars such as Gerald Clark and Carman Giordano, now among the youngest of the “young.”

results
Among the results obtained, we highlight:
having confirmed that intestinal inflammation lowers the seizure threshold and having compared the ability to reduce intestinal inflammation with that of controlling epileptic seizures;
having demonstrated that, by strengthening the microbiota, behavioral disorders induced by genetic damage are brilliantly resolved.
